All about my wooden jewelry
Where does the wood for Racines Artisanat jewelry come from?
I primarily work with wood scraps recovered from local artisans: cabinetmakers, luthiers, and antique furniture restorers. Precious wood pieces that have become too small for their creations are thus repurposed in the workshop instead of being discarded.
Each piece already has a story before becoming a piece of jewelry. This approach extends the use of wood already in circulation rather than seeking new material specifically for my jewelry. When its origin is known, I specify it on the product sheet.
How to choose the wood for your jewelry?
Each wood species has its own color and grain. Amaranth naturally tends towards purple and darkens with age; rosewood displays rosy shades with salmon to dark red veins; olive wood is distinguished by a very pronounced, almost graphic pattern; while walnut offers a deep brown hue.
The choice is primarily visual and based on your preferences. Some species can also pair particularly well with a gold or silver finish.
To discover their colors, characteristics, and history, find all the wood species I work with in my wood species guide.
Are the wooden parts stained?
No. The colours of my jewellery come from the wood itself, without any dye. The purple of amaranth, the pinkish hues of rosewood, and the contrasting patterns of olive wood are all entirely natural.
This is precisely one of the particularities of precious woods: each species naturally has its own palette of colours and grain patterns. These shades may evolve slightly over time and with exposure to light, as wood remains a natural material.
Is wooden jewelry suitable for sensitive skin?
They are designed to be suitable for sensitive skin. All posts, rings, chains, and clasps are made of silver or gold stainless steel, a hypoallergenic material that complies with European standards.
The wood is carefully sanded and then varnished. This finish creates a barrier between the raw wood and the skin, as some wood species can naturally be irritating to particularly sensitive skin. This is one of the reasons why I chose this combination of materials from the beginning.
How do you care for wooden jewelry?
Wood is a natural material. Varnish protects it from moisture and allows occasional contact with water. To preserve your jewelry over time, it is nevertheless advisable to avoid repeated immersion, as well as direct contact with perfumes and cosmetic products.
After contact with water, simply wipe it with a soft cloth and let it air dry. When not wearing it, store it away from moisture and direct light.
Stainless steel is water-resistant and does not tarnish. A simple wipe with a soft cloth is enough to restore its shine. Over time, wood may subtly change and develop a patina, without losing its character.
Can I have my jewelry refreshed several years after purchase?
Yes. Many years after your purchase, I can sand and refresh the finish of your jewelry free of charge to restore its brilliance. Simply contact me to request this service.
Can I customize a wooden piece of jewelry?
Yes. Some wooden jewelry can be customized with engraving in the workshop, depending on the shape and size of the piece: initials, a date, a short word or other inscription short enough to fit on the jewelry.
Feasibility depends on the model and the available space on the wood. If you wish to create personalized jewelry, contact me before placing your order, indicating the model and the desired engraving. I can then confirm what is possible.
However, this service is only available outside of the winter period, i.e., from early March to late October.
Can I order a piece of jewelry in a different wood species?
Yes, depending on the wood species available in the workshop. If you like a model but want a different species than those offered on the product page, you can contact me.
I can show you the available woods and advise you based on the chosen model. As a large part of precious woods comes from reclaimed scraps, availability changes regularly and some species may be present in very small quantities.
